History of Tennis From The Beginning
Tennis is basically a racket sport that is played between the two players i.e. singles or between two teams consisting of two players each i.e. doubles. Tennis is played at all levels of society. Tennis is basically an Olympic sport.
History of Tennis
Historians believe that the origin of the ancient tennis lay in 12th century in northern France. At that time, it is known as “jeu de paume” which means “game of the palm”. In jeu de paume, the ball was struck with the palm of a hand. Later, it was evolved into real tennis. In the 16th century, the game began to called “tennis” and rackets came into use. The word “tennis” came from a French term “tenez” which means “hold”, “receive” or “take”. The game became popular in France and England with the passage of time.
19th Century and Modern Era:
In 19th century, modern game of tennis was originated in the city of Birmingham, England. The game of tennis was originated in between 1859 and 1865. Harry Gem and Augurio Perera developed the game of tennis. They were both friends. Harry Gem was an English writer, soldier, lawyer and the sportsman. His friend Augurio Perera was a Spanish-born merchant and sportsman based in England. They played tennis for the first time on the Perera’s croquet lawn in Birmingham, England. Later, in 1872, they founded the world’s first tennis club along with the two doctors on Avenue Road, Leamington Spa. That’s how modern tennis came into existence.
