The dimensions of a tennis court are according to Laws of International Tennis Federation (ITF). The tennis court is 78 feet long. For single matches, its width is 27 feet. For double matches, its width is 36 feet. The service line is 21 feet from the net. A net is placed between the court to divide it into two equal parts. The net is 3 feet 6 inches high.
The game of tennis is played on different types of surfaces. Each surface has its own characteristics. There are 4 types of surfaces i.e. Clay Courts, Hard Courts, Grass courts and Carpet Courts.
Nowadays, Clay courts are only used in French Open. Clay courts are made of stone or brick and crushed shale. Main specification of play court is that it slows down the ball and produce high bounce as compared to grass or hard courts. Clay court is cheaper to construct as compared to other types of tennis court.
Nowadays, Grass Courts are used in Wimbledon. Grass courts are the fastest type of courts. They consist of grass grown which adds additional variables. Ball bounce depends on how healthy the grass is. The grass surface is the most physically forgiving for human body because of its softness.
Nowadays, Hard courts are used in Australian Open and US Open. Hard Courts are made of uniform rigid material which is often covered with acrylic surface layer. Hard Court is faster than Clay court but not as fast as Grass Court.
Nowadays, Carpet Courts are used in ATP challenge tour and WTA tour tournaments such as Trofeo Citta di Brescia of ATP and Turnol de Quebec of WTA. Carpet Courts are mainly used in indoor arenas. Carpet Court is generally a fast surface. It is faster than hard court but with low bounce.
